Amnesty International: Arizona Law Violates Human Rights

WASHINGTON -- Amnesty International announced that it was "appalled" over SB 1070, Arizona's new law that makes it a crime to be undocumented, saying the legislation "will surely increase racial profiling, arbitrary arrests and detentions in the state." In a statement released Tuesday, the human rights organization charged that by signing the bill into law, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer had "abdicated her responsibility to protect the human rights of every individual in Arizona...not just those who look 'American.'" Amnesty International called the law "cruel and misguided," adding, "Human rights exist regardless of nationality, ethnicity or immigration status."
Amnesty International noted that the fundamental right to liberty and protection against arbitrary detention is a universal human right that applies to migrants regardless of status and is protected in Article 9 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), signed and ratified by the United States. This right is also in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 16 of the Convention on Migrant Workers.
