Gullible Chinese Restaurant Owner Scammed

World Journal, Posted: Oct 21, 2009

LOS ANGELES -- Chinese restaurant owners who tried to sell their businesses in Southern California became victims of fraud and lost up to 40,000 dollars, reports the World Journal.

The Lin family from Riverside is probably the latest victim of this possible scam series. They told the paper that a 70-year-old Chinese man named Chan with a Cantonese accent approached them as a potential buyer in early June and claimed to be the housekeeper of a wealthy Indonesian businessman.

After meeting with the Lins a few times and gaining their trust, Chan invited them to gamble with the businessmans son and asked them to deliberately lose money to the son so he would stop gambling. Chan promised to give them back the money. The Lins believed Chan, but soon found themselves poorer by $40,000. They never saw Chan again. Chan had extracted a promise from the Lins to keep their deal under wraps.
