U.S. Seeks to Improve Relations With Mexico

La Raza, Posted: Apr 14, 2010

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The White House is taking steps to strengthen its relationship with Mexico, La Raza reports. Among these are plans to launch a second phase of initiatives such as Plan Merida, the first official visit of First Lady Michelle Obama to Mexico, and the state visit of President Felipe Caldern to Washington, D.C. Obama met with Mexican First Lady Margarita Zavala, visited schools, and attend a reception with women leaders.

U.S. officials are discussing launching a second phase of the initiative, despite criticism from the Mexican government that they have been slow to deliver equipment and money under Plan Merida.

A group of U.S. Latino Congressmen met with Mexican president Felipe Caldern to discuss the future of the Merida Initiative.

Representative Henry Cuellar, D-
Texas, said, Aid to Mexico is not going to stop. Their national interest is ours too.
