ICE to Cooperate with Another Georgia Sheriff

Mundo Hispnico, news, Posted: Jul 19, 2009

ATLANTA The Gwinnett County Sheriffs Office became the fifth police force in Georgia with the power to investigate the immigration status of detainees and deport undocumented immigrants, reports Mundo Hispnico. Sheriff Butch Conway worked for more than a year to get the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to approve participation in the 287(g) program, an agreement between ICE and local police agencies. Last week the federal government approved his petition, along with that of 10 other localities in the country. The news came as a shock to local immigrant rights groups who had been opposing participation in 287(g). The news impacts us because we know our people will suffer the consequences, Teodoro Maus, spokesperson for the Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights, told Mundo Hispnico. The sheriff has bad intentions with 287(g).

New agreements are with the Monmouth, N.J. County Sheriffs Office, Rhode Island Department of Corrections, Delaware Department of Corrections Sussex Correctional Institution, Houston Police Department, City of Mesquite, N.V., Police Department Morristown, N.J. Police Department, City of Mesa, Ariz. Police Department, Florence, Ariz. Police Department, Guilford County, N.C. Sheriff's Office and the Charleston County, S.C. Sheriff's Office.
