Latinos Outnumber Whites in San Fernando Valley

La Opinin, Posted: Jan 10, 2010

LOS ANGELES--Latinos have become the largest ethnic group in San Fernando Valley to the north of Los Angeles, reports La Opinin. According to updated census data, Latinos now represent 42.4 percent of the population in the area, followed by 41.8 percent for whites. Eight years ago, the white population outnumbered Latinos by five percentage points. The growth is attributed to availability of affordable housing in the valley, but Latinos there still face challenges in access to education, health care and political representation, reports the Spanish daily. According to a new census report, Latinos make up 49.1 percent of the population of Los Angeles; whites represent 28.9 percent, Asians 10.2 percent and blacks 9.5 percent.
