New Republican Platform Tougher On Immigration

La Opnion, news report, Posted: Sep 06, 2008

ST. PAUL, Minn. The new Republican Partys platform plans to be tougher on immigration, reports the Spanish language newspaper La Opinin. The platform that was approved at the Republican National Convention, calls for English to be the official U.S. language and opposes any amnesty for undocumented immigrants. In 2004, the platform called for a humane solution to the immigration situation. The new platform also seeks to expedite the completion of the U.S.-Mexico border wall and deny undocumented immigrants drivers licenses. However, denial of U.S. citizenship to children born of undocumented parents was removed. Lincoln Diaz Balart, a Republican congressman from Florida, told La Opinin that he does not agree with the new platform additions and said that what will ultimately matter the most is John McCains position. McCain wrote the draft for original comprehensive immigration reform, and if elected, he would call for securing the borders before considering legalization plans.
