The Anti-Immigrant Lobby
El Diario/La Prensa, Editorial, Staff, Posted: Feb 04, 2009
For several years, organizations across the nation have rallied for sensible and humane immigration reform. But a persistent minority continues to work to undermine real policy reform.
This minority has no interest in compromises. Its anti-immigration agenda is driven by an ugly nativist, xenophobic movement that blames immigrants for every problem under the sun, that has in the past attacked Catholics and Jews as sneaky and blacks and the Chinese as inferior.
The target, this time, is Latinos. Together, Numbers USA, the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) and Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) have worked to distort immigration, intimidate legislators, and scuttle bills. A report issued yesterday by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) shows their racist and xenophobic foundation.
The chief architect of these groups is John Tanton, who doubts minorities can run a civilization, questions the educability of Latinos, and who believes non white immigration is a threat to white America. The SPLC describes Tanton's work with advocates of the racist pseudo science of eugenics and white supremacists.
FAIR, CIS and Numbers USA have tried to distance themselves from Tanton. But SPLC exposes years of interaction and collaboration between them and Tanton.
The nativist movement acts on paranoia that the U.S. is under siege by foreigners who will wreak havoc on the country. Yet U.S. history and overwhelming research show a nation continuously energized by the work of immigrants.
But CIS is interested in anything but studies. Numbers USA is interested in anything but data. And FAIR is anything but that.
It’s time for our legislators to stop treating these groups as if they are credible and to see them for what they are—fear mongerers who want to derail a 21st century America.

nativessayno I am calling you out on your statements. I said it before: You do not represent the Native Indians, you only represent yourself, and I'm very familiar with what Chavez did and it is exactly what I stated. You can deny your position all you want, but everyone who knows anything NumbersUSA spreads lies and propaganda and you are trying to help them. That makes me very suspect of your heritage and integrity.

I portray myself as someone that is adamantly opposed to illegal immigration. I represent myself and I happen to have native heritage. Throwing out terms like dishonorable; does that make you feel better or more righteous for your position?
Defending your view of Cesar Chavez as though his stated views were unclear....he struggled very, very hard and endured hunger strikes for a thoroughly just cause. He did not do that on behalf of illegal immigrants. However, you want to reinterpret his stated goals and causes to mean the opposite of what he strove for entirely!
You may have marched with Indian leaders, but you failed to learn that to slam others as dishonorable and liars when you disagreed is not their usual M.O; far from it!
Illegal immigrant population of 25-30M determining their own immigration policies and laws here at the citizen taxpayer's expense is what many citizen's oppose- a majority actually. We are liars and dishonorable how?
-Quote from Cesar Chavez from when he testified before Congress in 1979:
“. . . when the farm workers strike and their strike is successful, the employers go to Mexico and have unlimited, unrestricted use of illegal alien strikebreakers to break the strike. And, for over 30 years, the Immigration and Naturalization Service has looked the other way and assisted in the strikebreaking. I do not remember one single instance in 30 years where the Immigration Service has removed strikebreakers. . . .The employers use professional smugglers to recruit and transport human contraband across the Mexican border for the specific act of strikebreaking . . .”
In your world my ancestors and Chavez consider me a liar. You are thoroughly befuddled.

nativessayno - I have marched with many Indian leaders, and many Indian leaders have marched with us, and we always had the same goals. So you are opposing the goals of your ancestors. I guess that is your choice, but definitely do not portray yourself as the face of the Indian people, because you are not. Chavez objected to the use of illegal immigrants as leverage against fair wages, he never objected to immigrants. Your honorable ancestors (if you are what you say you are), would never have lied (i.e. "ridiculous demands for entitlements") about illegal immigrants, something that seems to come easy for you. You are very dishonorable.

I happen to have my very own blood quantum card issued to me by the US BIA. To your point: that I am masquerading dishonorably as a native....you are masquerading as someone that cares about the fate of this country. Call out those you disagree with an attempt to dishonor them, right?
The great and honorable champion of Latino rights and pride; Cesar Chavez was passionately against illegal immigration. In your world he would be a liar and not even a real Latino, right? BTW, cite for me some REAL natives that love Open Borders, will you?
My great grandfather and great grand uncle were prominent and celebratred figures in my tribe. They would take umbrage at your unfounded remarks about lying, dishonor, racism etc. You, my friend, speak with forked tongue!
I support legal immigration and am very nation-proud...Many vets in my family tree...they did not fight for people that would within a few decades state: stop whining, get used to it.. for a very free and easy ride to US citizenship.
Illegal immigrants HAVE a country which they love already....it aint ours!

Nativessayno - I believe you are lying about your heritage. American Indians have a great number of relatives across the borders and many of their families would be shattered if they could not come across the borders. If your ancestors have been here for MILLENIA! then you'd understand that your people were decimated and sentenced to live in reservations. You are a lowlife masquarading as an American Indian. The cause of the nativists is not the cause of the real natives. CIS, NumbersUSA, Jorge Borjas, etc, have for years been using propaganda and outright lies for their own yes... RACIST agenda. The facts do not fit their statistics, the result is called a lie. Undocumented do not qualify for any entitlements, and thus cost very little money to the government, that's another lie you like to tell. So you hide yourself behind a veil of credibility which you don't have. American Indians have been marrying Mexicans for hundred of years and are very affected by the racist immigration policies by the US. To claim otherwise is either ignorant, or an outright lie. Why would you (if you were a native) support the policies of those who would like nothing less than the disappearance of all minorities in the US? Since there is no good answer for that, I'd have to say that you are masquarading dishonarably as a native. It's in the bible "Thou shalt not lie"

"RACISM" and "XENOPHOBIC" are nothing but sensationalized buzzwords that the pro-illegals use for their own warped purposes. Tell us then; what do you call the RECONQUISTA MOVEMENT?? Please, do tell us what toned down, subtle, damage-control buzzwords you have for AZTLAN NATION and LA RAZA? Surely, RACIST and XENOPHOBIC would never be applied to those concepts.... HUH?
p.s...
ILLEGALS ARE IN NO POSITION TO MAKE DEMANDS IN OUR COUNTRY. THEY WERE NOT INVITED HERE - THEY SNEAKED ACROSS THE BORDER. THEREFORE THEY ARE CRIMINALS AND HAVE NO CIVIL LIBERTIES NOR RIGHTS.

American citizens want the rule of law followed in America. We want our borders enforced, we do not want to continue to pay for section 8, health care, education and welfare, for illegal immigrants or the anchor babies they have. We do want the illegal immigrants to go home. We do not want amnesty, we do not want integration, we do not approve of illegal immigration that prey on our taxdollars, (which the business community have succeeded in stealing for their own greed). Contact the White House (202) 456-1111 or call the Switchboard of Congress 202-224-3121 and say no to all illegal immigrant pork in the stimulus bill, they have already robbed us with the SCHIPP bill which includes legal and illegal immigrant line items.
It is not racist or xenophobic to want people to come in our country legally. Trust me black and white Americans know what racisim looks like, this does not cut the muster. We want to end birthright citizenship. I want an opt-out when it comes to my taxdollars, my taxes are not for people who do not belong in this country or their children and extended families. Our tax dollars are for the US citizen poor, this is unfortunate, we have been more than humane and tolerant, now open border pro-amnesty groups are taking our kindness for weakness and we are sick of it!

to unjustly maligned: You failed to read my post carefully, I stated that we (citizens) are called lazy.....to diss us for the sake of taking our jobs. See the difference?
The bulk of my relatives were here several millennia before the Mayflower set sail. Your own prejudice is in favor of marauders instead of citizens.
It is my view that you choose to; or know NOTHING about "native" concerns.
Also, if it is as bad for "new" immigrants here as you say...why not go back home and get off our back?
Just throwing out terms: prejudice and xenophobia ...and stop whining-get used to it. You are hopelessly confused but espouse a love of our beautiful country and defend job-stealing in this dire fiscal crisis. You claim much knowledge about "American soil"....but you missed the proverbial boat by 1000 miles and your claims sound like uninformed edicts on behalf of your beloved "newly arrived". I hate to break it to you; but they don't care one iota about you.
Descendant of Maligned Immigrants on Feb 05, 2009 at 10:20:30 said:
It distresses me to see the very xenophobia and racism that this article addresses displayed in the comments posted on it. I dare say that none of the previous posters are actually native to american soil -- their ancestors came here from elsewhere as well. Unless they happen to come from an indigenous American community, they are their vitriol against immigrants today is the epitome of hypocrisy. And just as my irish ancestors were unjustly maligned and blamed for the ills of American society when they immigrated to this country, immigrants today are also unjustly maligned.
New immigrants to this country are often the worst paid, in the worst jobs, that offer no health benefits. Rather than blaming them for the situation that they find themselves in, where they are limited to a pool of crap work that no "native" american wants to do, and end up needing state assistance to take their children to the doctor or to make ends meet. Having been an elementary school teacher in largely immigrant populations in Arizona and Texas, I can tell you that immigrants, and most especially the most recent immigrants, are far more likely than their "native" counterparts, to be working two or even three jobs. They work hard, and they get very little in recompense, other than the abuse of people like the previous posters. They clean our houses and offices, do backbreaking work picking our fruit and vegetables (which would cost a whole lot more if not for their underpaid labor), and generally perform the jobs that no-one else wants to do. That hardly sounds like they "hit the proverbial jackpot" to me.
Two more things. First, there are plenty of people with long and illustrious histories in this country who are on welfare and other forms of state assistance. My family has been in the United States since the mayflower, but my mother was a single mom raising five kids, and we received state assistance when I was a child. I wouldn't have been able to go to the doctor otherwise. All five of her children are now productive members of society whose taxes go to support others who happen to be in the unlucky situation we found ourselves in when we were young.
Second, there are as many different types of immigrant to this country as there are immigrants, and blanket statements about all of them being lazy, entitled job stealers are simply not true. When you characterize an entire loosely defined group by the qualities of a few of its members, that's called prejudice. In this particular case, the prejudice being exhibited is called xenophobia. If you're uncomfortable with the label, stop acting in a xenophobic manner.
It's people like the previous posters who tarnish the good name of our beautiful country, the constitution on which it is based, and give Americans a bad name worldwide. We are a country of immigrants. Get used to it and stop whining.

The treasonous fight for open borders is off to an early start in the BHO administration, as this lie-encrusted hit piece shows.
John Tanton has been a forward-looking patriot and environmentalist, who is honest enough to observe that not all diversity is equal. Different cultures create different societies. If that weren\'t true, why aren\'t millions clamoring to live in Pakistan and Laos?
For the real John Tanton, see his website where he responds to the attacks on his work. www.johntanton.org/index.html

Lost of blustery emo-speak...but where are objective facts?
-->Take NumbersUSA: please present one shred of evidence where Mr. Beck promotes xenophobia, hatred or racism!!!! This is an outright lie by El Diario/La Prensa. A lLIE, people. Lying to bully us into compliance with their narrow, self-intrests and ungrateful agendas!
....The nativist movement acts on paranoia that the U.S. is under siege by foreigners who will wreak havoc on the country...
We are talking about at least 25-30M worker frauds that the so-called nativists are objecting to, right?
So, to set this "story" in objective terms:
US taxpaying citizens are pretty fed-up with the 25-30M "new arrivals" that weigh us down with:
-Ridiculous demands for entitlements
-Call us names; lazy etc
-Expect that if they have progeny here; they are partially citizen's fiscal responsibility.
- We are also responsible for the births of their kids, medical, WIC and on and on.
-We are expected in sanctuary cities to hand over our jobs
-Permit "execeptions" to laws that citizens are required to adhere to.
-Coddle them or make "exceptions" when our laws and borders are repeatedly broken
-Send billions to home countries annually
-Absorb increasing drug traffic & gang activity, violence and culture
And if that were not enough...we have to like this too.
NO!!! Press your representatives for E-Verify in the congressional bill. Dare I say that the "immigrant" free-for-all is confronting us with tens of millions of downright scoundrels?
Was it so miserable in Latin America that you had to come here and oppress us, or did you just hit the proverbial "jackpot" at our expense by coming here?
