Finding Lost Souls in Mexico

New America Now, Audio, Sandip Roy Posted: Mar 23, 2010

Editor's Note: The specter of deportation does not just hang over migrants crossing the border illegally in the dead of night and working somewhere in a poultry farm. Monika Navarro's family has been settled in America for decades. Her mother is an immigration lawyer. Her grandfather came here legally. Still, her two uncles, Gino and Augie, both legal US residents, found themselves deported and sent back to Mexico. But when Monika Navarro went across the border to find out why, she found a story that had as much to do with the troubled history of her own family as the politics of immigration.

Monika Navarro directed the film Animas Perdidas, or Lost Souls, which airs as part of the Independent Lens series on PBS on Tuesday, March 23rd.
