Health Care Woes for Latinos

New America Now Radio, Audio, Odette Keeley Posted: Aug 28, 2009

Editor's Note: Odette Keeley, news anchor for "Stories From The Ethnic Media" on NAM's radio program, "New America Now" on 91.7 FM KALW, talks to ethnic media professionals about their outlets' news headlines and their take on the news of the day.

This week: La Opinion's political editor and columnist Pilar Marrero on how the healthcare debate foreshadows the immigration reform debate; and, La Raza's reporter Fabiola Pomareda on Latino elders' lack of information on and access to emergency services.

Odette Keeley talks to:

Pilar Marrero, Political Editor for La Opinion, about the scapegoating of undocumented immigrants during the health care towns and the possible ramifications of these attacks on the debate for immigration reform;
and Fabiola Pomareda, reporter for La Raza, discusses why some Latino seniors in Chicago cannot or do not access emergency medical services because of lack of information. She gives some valuable tips that advocates want the elderly and their families to know about these services.
