10,000 Filipino-American Vets Get $123M

MANILA—As of November 20, more than 10,000 Filipino and Filipino-American veterans of World War II have received their one-time compensation for military service during the war, totaling nearly P5.8 billion ($123 million), the United States embassy here said in a statement.

The one-time compensation, which is $9,000 for those who have kept their Filipino citizenship and $15,000 for those who have become American citizens, recognizes the service of Filipinos during the war. It is included in the 2009 Filipino Veterans Equity Compensation law, which was passed by the U.S. Congress and signed by President Barack Obama in February 2009. The embassy reminded other veterans who may still be living that they have until February 16, 2010 to apply for it.

yes, that is a very good news for those living veterans, but how about those who died earlier? My father-in-law died 12 days after he received his american citizenship, after many months of paper works, it is just so sad that his family did'nt received even a little amount of that compensation offered by US veterans.
