AZ Bill to Establish Armed, State Militia Passes Hurdle

An Arizona state bill that would create an armed, volunteer militia to patrol the Arizona-Mexico border for undocumented immigrants and drug traffickers passed in committee and will be now be taken up in the state House.

Senate Bill 1083, which would establish and fund an Arizona Special Missions Unit, passed the House Military Affairs and Public Safety Committee in a party-line 6-3 vote on Wednesday. The bill now heads to the Appropriations Committee, then to the Rules Committee for vetting, then to the floor of the House for a debate and vote.
