Gay Immigrants Face Abuse in Detention

Lawyers and human rights groups say that gay, transgender and HIV positive immigrants being held in detention facilities are vulnerable to abusive treatment, including verbal and physical assaults, reports Rumbo. Activists met with members of the Obama administration in Washington, D.C., to discuss policies on the detention of transgender immigrants, as well as needed medical care for detainees who are HIV positive. The advocates' concerns come at a time when the Obama administration has made a commitment to reform the polices and conditions of detention for immigrants.

I don't know that the US is not liberal to GLBTQ people. The college I teach at actually has a department to help these types of students. I think what this article fails to point out is that these people wound up in detention because they are here illegally, not because of their orientation.

I live in LA and know a lot of people engaged with getting their papers to stay here legally. From what I understand, normal people do not end up in detention facilities. They inform you ahead of time to leave on your own. Now if you commit a crime or decide to ignore the governments notice too bad.
Lets face it, Latino men (especially the ones that end up in detention facilities) are not very "metrosexual." Most GLBTQ foreiners know this.
I know I will get flamed with the 'they will risk everything to come here' comment. The short: Considering how many people are openly out there, America is not very liberal when it comes GLBTQ. From what I hear people pay thousands to come here from the south. If you want real acceptance take that money and try to get into the Nordic countries. They are very accepting and a lot more liberal than us.
