Hillary Clinton Urges Filipinos to Tweet on Corrupt Officials

Philippine News, Posted: Nov 17, 2009

MANILA--Without naming President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's administration, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, at the end of her two-day visit, warned of the “very unfortunate impact” of corruption on the people, and encouraged Filipinos, particularly youth, "to report corruption" through social networking. Clinton was speaking at a town hall meeting in a Manila university.

Clinton said technological advances like social networking can be used to exact accountability from leaders, citing as examples the recent Twitter-triggered demonstrations in Iraq and Colombia.

The Arroyo administration is plagued with corruption charges, the most recent of which was a recommendation from the Senate blue ribbon committee to file impeachment proceedings against Arroyo for her involvement in a national broadband bribery scandal. Aside from Arroyo, the committee is also readying graft charges against her husband, Mike Arroyo. Earlier, her son, Pampanga Representative Mikey Arroyo, figured in an unexplained ownership of prime pieces of real estate in the United States.

I don't know why, but Filipinos are generally scared to take action against their corrupt government. Look at how long Marcos maintained power. A new leader needs to rise up, one who will not take payola and under the table bribes. Does such a leader exist?

Its good Mrs Clinton put Philippine corruption in the world stage for all the world to know. Putting to shame our leaders (if ever they know how to be ashamed at all) All of them should work for the betterment of all Filipinos' lives. Be accountable, responsible and achieve something for all to enjoy incldg future generations. Think about Singapore, really a disciplined people and theyre Asians too. Are we Filipinos sinking fast or is time for vigilantes to act for a cleaner government? Corrupt politicians, you are all put on notice!

Hillary clinton should start cleaning her own house/ground before telling the filipino people to report corruption. Start with Washington D.C. ... shame shame shame..

It is common knowledge that there is corruption in the philippine govt... however it is a lesser degree than that of the u.s. government, in addition such comment coming from hillary clinton, is somewhat a joke.
