Mexico Deports 41 Undocumented Cubans

El Nuevo Herald, Posted: Dec 05, 2008

MIAMI -- Mexico deported 41 undocumented Cubans to Cuba Dec. 4 in the first repatriation since October, when the two countries signed an agreement to fight the trafficking of immigrants from Mexico to the United States, reported the National Migration Institute (INM). The group of deportees, 37 men and four women, boarded a Mexican Navy ship that departed from Isla Mujeres, according to the statement. Before October, Mexican authorities rarely returned Cubans to their country. In recent years, however, growing numbers of Cuban immigrants have crossed into Mexico, often through Cancun, on their way to Texas. This has become the preferred route for many Cubans since it has become more difficult to evade the U.S. Coast Guard off of Florida. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has reported that 11,126 Cubans have arrived in the United States through Mexico, while only 1,055 came through the Miami area.
