Navajo Times Publisher Wins Award

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. -- Tom Arviso, Jr., publisher of the Navajo Times newspaper, has been named the winner of the 2009 John Peter and Anna Catherine Zenger Award by the University of Arizona School of Journalism and the Arizona Newspaper Foundation. For more than 50 years, the Zenger Award has honored those who have made extraordinary contributions to freedom of the press issues and the people's "right to know." Arviso, a member of the Navajo Nation, is known for advocating for freedom of the press issues and challenging editorial control and censorship. In 2000-2001, he became the first American Indian to receive a John S. Knight Fellowship at Stanford University.
