Mayweather Blames Pacquiao for Mega-Fight Collapse

Inquirer.net, Sports Report, Francis T.J. Ochoa, Philippine Daily Inquirer Posted: Jan 08, 2010

MANILA, Philippines -- Floyd Mayweather Jr. is done playing the goat in the latest boxing drama.

The undefeated American superstar, blamed for the collapse of the so-called Fight of the Century, pointed to Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao as the real reason for the megabouts cancelation.

This developed as Top Rank, which promotes Pacquiao, announced in its social networking sites that the reigning pound-for-pound champion will face highly ranked welterweight Joshua Clottey in mid-March.

In a statement sent to media offices and circulated over the Internet Friday, Mayweather blasted the Pacquiao camp for turning down what his camp saw as a feasible compromise to the Olympic-style random drug-testing he proposed for the fight.

Mediation on the Pacquiao-Mayweather disagreement on testing protocols failed Thursday.

I am thoroughly disgusted that Pacquiao and his representatives are trying to blame me for the fight not happening when clearly the blame is on them, Mayweather said in a statement also carried by wire agencies.

First and foremost, not only do I want to fight Pacquiao, I want to whip his punk ass.

The statement came after Arum said that Mayweatheraccused throughout his career of cherry-picking his opponentswas simply ducking Pacquiao. Arum called Mayweather a psychological coward.

Manny Pacquiao and his team are denying the people a chance to see the biggest fight ever, Mayweather said.

Boxinginsider.com reported that noted columnists Mike Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser, speaking on the ESPN show Pardon the Interruption, saw things differently.

I blame Mayweather, Wilbon said. He came up with all this blood stuff. He can make $40 to $50 million. Mayweather looks bad.

Its hard for me to believe this fight wont happen, Kornheiser added. If I have to blame somebody, its Mayweather.

In its Facebook and Twitter pages, Top Rank announced that it was lining up Pacquiao for a match against Clottey, who lost a close decision to Pacman victim Miguel Cotto last year.

The announcement came after Team Pacquiao said the fight against Yuri Foreman was off because of size concerns.

Its a real honor the greatest pound-for-pound fighter in the world doesnt want to fight me, Foreman, the 29-year-old WBA super welterweight champion, said. This is the greatest compliment Ive gotten in boxing.
