Elder Abuse Grows in Chinese Community
World Journal, Jingwen Huang, Posted: Sep 27, 2009
NEW YORK -- Chinese elders who are victims of domestic violence have a hard time asking for help, reports the World Journal. One 72-year-old Brooklyn man was repeatedly beaten by his 21-year-old son, but after calling the police could not bear to see him in handcuffs. A counselor at the Garden of Hope in New York explained that Chinese parents rely on their children after retirement and will put up with abuse because of their financial dependence. It is also common in Chinese culture to keep family problems private. The number of male victims in particular have increased recently, due in part to their tendency to repress their emotions more than women.
