SF Supervisors Vote to Limit Local Funds for ICE 'Holds'

Posted: Dec 14, 2011

SAN FRANCISCO -- The San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to support San Francisco Sheriff Mike Hennessey and Juvenile Probation chief William Sifferman to further limit the use of local funds to respond to voluntary immigration “holds” or “detainer” requests. The measure, introduced by Supervisor Eric Mar, passed by an 8-3 super-majority. ICE “holds” or “detainers” are optional requests that ICE sends to local jails to ask them to detain immigrants for an additional period of time so that ICE can pick up the individual for deportation. The resolution states that “entanglement between local law enforcement and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) harms public safety and interferes with community policing strategies by increasing fear in immigrant communities of coming forward to report crimes” and supports adopting a policy that does not use local funds to respond to ICE's “detainer” requests.
