News Reports Exaggerate Obama’s Problems with Jewish Voters

The Jewish Daily Forward, Posted: Jun 04, 2008

NEW YORK – When presidential candidate Barack Obama campaigned in South Florida recently, the New York Times and other newspapers claimed that Obama had a long, arduous task ahead of him to win over Jewish voters. But some observers are saying Obama’s support among Jewish voters is strong, writes the Jewish Daily Forward. They point out that Jewish voters were more supportive than whites in general in several states including Florida. A May Gallup Poll showed that 61 percent of Jewish voters across the nation preferred Obama. McCain got 32 percent. The same poll showed an overall preference in the general population for Obama of 45 percent to 43 percent. Jewish Floridians are concerned that the media is portraying Jewish voters as “uninformed and fearful” and solely focused on Israel. In reality they are sophisticated and tuned to a number of issues.
