One in Four Inmates Is Latino

La Opinión, Posted: Mar 20, 2010

LOS ANGELES -- Latino youth are overrepresented in the detention system across the country according to a study published by the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) reports Spanish-language daily La Opinión. More than 72,000 young people are in jail on any given day. Latinos make up 25 percent of those in detention, although they make out only 19 percent of the total population in the nation.

“What’s going on is that this country is trying to resolve problems by jailing rather than preventing,” said Randy Jurado Ertll, director of the Action Center an organization in Pasadena that offers resources to low-income families. Ertll told La Opinión that the system is criminalizing youth and trying to make their issues invisible.

“We are concerned that so many youth are being detained for minor crimes,” said Jorge Mario Cabrera, a spokesperson for the Coalition Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA).

This is a poorly and out of context translated article. My quotes are not translated accurately from Spanish language in La Opinion to NAM's translation into English. You need a better translation - to more accurately reflect my quotes in the original La Opinion newspaper.
