New York Chinese Protest 'Mouse' in Takeout Report

Sing Tao Daily, Posted: Feb 05, 2007

NEW YORK - About 400 Asian Americans gathered in front of the television station CW11 (WPIX-TV Channel 11) in freezing weather on Feb. 4 to protest the station's report that a woman found a mouse in her Chinese takeout, reports the Chinese-language Sing Tao Daily. In a CW11 television report about the New Food King restaurant in Brooklyn, a customer claimed she had found a piece of meat that was shaped like a rodent in her food. The television station later interviewed a biologist who said the piece of meat was a rodent. New York City councilman John Liu said that the biologist that the television station found was not reputable and that the biologist's report should have been verified before the report went on the air. Protesters waved signs that read "Say Sorry" to demand that the television station apologize. But the station did not issue an apology. Lawyers representing the restaurant said the restaurant may plan to sue the television station, according to Sing Tao.

New York's CW11 shuns questions about internal probe into "fried mice" reports

By Li Bo

NEW YORK, March 13 (Xinhua) -- CW11 news station in New York City has shunned questions about whether there has been an internal investigation into its TV broadcasts alleging that mouse meat had been found in a takeout order from a Brooklyn Chinese restaurant, according to the local source.

Albert Wang, a Chinese-American attorney, told Xinhua Tuesday that he had sent several emails to CW11's management, asking repeatedly the same question, but only got a reply from CW11 General Manager Betty Ellen Berlamino, saying "we do not discuss internal employment matters outside the company."

"They even do not answer yes or no," said Wang, who was a member of an earlier negotiation team on behalf of the Chinese-American side with CW11.

On Tuesday, Wang sent a certified mail to Dennis J. Fitzsimons, CEO of Tribune Company, the holder of CW11, with the same question.

"Fortune 500 companies such as Tribune Company should be socially responsible, and should address the needs and concerns of their various stakeholders, groups that have a stake in or are impacted by a company's activities," Wang wrote in his letter to Fitzsimons.

According to Tribune Company's code of business conduct displayed on its website, it is intended to help ensure compliance with the highest legal and ethical standards.

The company also holds the "always ask first, act later" principle. Under the company's code of business conduct, "if you are unsure of what to do in any situation, seek guidance before you act."

In the letter, Wang urged the Tribune Company to promptly conduct an internal investigation into reporter Chris Glorioso's conduct in accordance with the company's code of business conduct and show itself to be a socially responsible media organization.

On Jan. 29, CW11 aired a news story by Chris Glorioso about the New Food King restaurant in Brooklyn, alleging that it had served mouse meat in a takeout meal box to Brooklyn's Deisha Dodd, before having the food professionally tested.

CW11 anchor Kaity Tong broadcast the story with laughter in the background. The report included statements such as "disgusting find," "sickening surprise," "nasty dining experience," and "rodent slathered in garlic sauce." Deisha Dodd said in the footage "I will never eat Chinese food again."

A Jan. 31 follow-up report included statements by a "professional food inspector" who supposedly tested the meat to prove the station's allegations.

CW11 is the flagship station of the CW Television Network, andis seen in over 10 million homes through over-the-air and satellite distribution in New York City, the State of New York, and areas of the States of New Jersey and Connecticut.

"Since CW11 has such a large coverage, its reports should be more careful," Wang told Xinhua. "Tribune Company's code of business conduct should not be window-dressing, it should be implemented by all its employees."

Chinese immigrants have staged two peaceful mass protests in front of the CW11 office in mid-town Manhattan against the reports, demanding an apology and compensation.

The owners of New Food King restaurant have filed a lawsuit against CW11, its parent company, the Tribune Company, reporter Chris Glorioso, and anchor Kaity Tong. The suit charges defamation and slander, and asks for 2 million dollars in damages and legal costs.

Attorney John Yong, who is representing the restaurant in the suit, told the media that since CW11 aired its first story the restaurant has received dozens of racist phone calls from people ordering mouse meat and telling the owners to "go back to China."

"The Chinese community in the United States used to be a silent minority, but this time it is out shouting," said Mr Du, a member of the U.S.-China Lawyers Society.

CW11, in a statement released on Feb. 26, said, "CW11 stands behind the accuracy of our news report, and believes the story provides no basis for legitimate controversy."

"This was a story that addressed a matter of public health and falls within the context of many recent reports about tainted and adulterated food," it said, adding, "there was absolutely no bias, no prejudice or malice intended toward any nationality."

But many Chinese restaurant owners in the United States told Xinhua their business had been affected by the reports.

The Chinese community organizations are mulling a third demonstration on April 2.

If you don't understand the style of chinese cooking then don't eat chinese food. It was not rodent, after the chicken was cooked it look like a rodent. The black lady doesn't know anything about chinese cusine and WC11 was stupid enough to made it public. They're making stories without any evidence. The whole thing was a set up. Now CW11 made a big mess and they're trying to cover up the issuse by deleting the videos on youtube. PEOPLE if you never cook chinese FOOD then DON'T JUDGE IT. The style of cooking is not like americans where as the foods are raw.Like indians the foods are ugly but they taste good. Evey culture had their own unique way of cooking.
Futhermore WC11 had a whole report about chinese people eating mouse. This was only true in few rural parts of China where they're poor and they've to eat anything they can find. IF you think about it their are people in India and Africa eating barks from trees. You should be glad that you even have meats. But in America the chinese are pretty wealthy why would they need to do something like that? Plus if you went to chinatown they've the most fleshes foods on sale, better than american supermarkets where the foods are there for weeks. Not only are the fruits and foods flesh also it's inexpensive. It's easlier to cook just chicken rather then going around to look for mouse. If you work in a chinese resturant you would know that they're busy for most of the time, they don't have time to look for mouse ok. Do you think chinese would waste their time looking for mouse while they can use that time to make money. We're not stupud ok, we know how to make money and wouldn't waste any time at all. moreover The chinese people's value food, food is heaven, which was why our cusine so good. When the europeans are eating bad breads around the 1700s chinese already had the best foods in the world. NOt only do we value food but we also like to made food looks pretty and delicous. Just within Chinatown we have more than 5000 resturants, we love to eat various kind of foods. We made good foods, that's why everybody love to eat in Chinese resturant. We have all kind of foods, sea foods, lamp, fish, duck, chicken...etc. but we never use mouse meat to cook. Not only do we value food we also value health, which was why our foods aren't as fat as americans. If you don't understand chinese culture, history and food please don't judge it!

DO you know how much they earn, a chinese resturant earn at least $17,000 per month. Each worker earned about $3100 per month and the boss would earn $4000 per month. Why in the world would they waste their time to pick mouse furs, it takes a longer time and it's more expensive. Not profitable at all.

DOn't be jealous but we chinese people know how to make money!!!

please lets ignore the racial issues and those who act discriminated.every ethnic groups are discriminated each other, and this is the fact. but if you people have common sense, then the restaurant would't provide mouse meat(rodent). who would do that, that doesn't make any profits and will ruin the business. i think there is no such supplier in practicing this foolish business. and you people think the health department is stupid and lazy. common, lets be neutral. if you are racists and discrimination then you should stay out of the issues between cw11 and the restaurant.hurting people will it make you feel good? please be nice and have peace for all ethnic types of people. stop your racial and discriminted behaviors.

1# why sometimes the texture of the Chinese style cooked chicken doesn't taste like chicken?

As I knowledge western cooking is usually "grilled", "boiled", and most of the time they use chicken breast. While the plate which talked about in the news "Chicken with broccoli", it isn't only "grill" or "boiled". The chicken will be sliced in thin layer usually 1/5 in. Then we will add egg white, corn starch, salt, plus some other seasoning. The chicken will soak in those for a couple hours those and lets the chemical reaction make the chicken more tender and also changed the texture. The meat will light fried and then put into chicken broth, then cook with the broccoli in sauce. Well, it just an example. I have customer think the chicken on stick is pork rid even with no bone just because it is red in color. I have customer think the chicken in chicken egg roll is pork because it is dark in color. The meat is red because we use a red sauce the meat is dark because we use soy sauce.

2# about the accident that the restaurant may use rat just because the rat jump in the bowl.

Try to think wisely. If there is a rat jump in the bowl, can’t you just distinguish it is not chicken with all those hair and tail?? If your vision is not that bad, you can. Will the chef use all the effort to shave all the hair off and pick all the little tiny bone out?? I guess not.

True, there are some Chinese eat rat or worm. However, its limited to certain area in China, and even those Chinese in these areas not everyone will eat rats.

As a audience, we are not only try to listen to what the media is telling you, but also need to think wisely.

I would like to point out a few facts as I am a chinese person and I know much better chinese custom and tranditions than you do.

First of all: Chinese people, and even Vainam and a lot other asian population do eat mouse. If you type mouse meat in chinese to google you will find at least 15000 result. The thing is they cook it really well and a lot people really like the taste. In many part of China you will actually need to buy mouse meat.

Second, not limited to mouse meat, some chinese esp in south east coast cities like Guangzhou, people eat a lot more stuff. Cockcroaches for example, flies and all kinds of bugs.

Third, I overheard from my friend who is also in restaurant business that the restaurant in New York do sell Broccli Mouse but they sell it only to chinese people as they are used to eat it and they like the dish. The accident happened when the guy who answered the customer's phone call mistakenly placed the order to kitchen.

I will this can give you a better idea of what might happened.

As far as i think the black woman who accused
the restaurant of serving mouse meat, and both the reporters are rascists, and take on the stereotypical belief of what Chinese people are.
As for the woman above who commented, "Will Taylor", i thinke she is ridiculous, and white trash. I think the whole thing was a fabricated story, caused out of jealously of some sort, and used to harm the businesses of chinese restaurants. All i'm gonna say for the people who wont eat chinese food because of this story is dont eat it if you want too, because somebody else will....and your pretty ridiculous, and not quite smart. I totally support striking against CW 11 until they agree to apologize on air. They should compensate financially at the same time, and never repeat something like this again, like what happened to the korean couple, or else they should get serious lawful punishments against the network.

Steven Wong on Feb 27, 2007 at 09:10:13 said:

Those who reported this story and those who believe it is true just have no common sense at all. Common sense tells us that a restaurant would not serve a rodent and ruin his business when chicken meat is very inexpensive and much easier to prepare. Further more, to prepare that “rodent” with a stripe of meat looked liked a tail intact, one must remove the bone of the tail like that of the ox tail -- probably take quite some operation for a muse size rodent. It just does not making sense.

Richard on Feb 27, 2007 at 04:38:08 said:

The argument is if that mouse-shaped meat is really a mouse as claimed by the reporter; secondly is if it is a mouse, did it really com from the Chinese restaurant?

What TV statement has claimed is rather because why the hell in the world they manage to skin mice sell them as food rather than selling chicken in which costs much less? Please stop believing hearsays. If you all just gonna believe something without knowing the facts, you might just be the same as the TV station.

No, nobody eats mouse in China, not any Chinese I know of. They believe because that what they want to believe.

Will Taylor on Feb 26, 2007 at 03:08:49 said:

Sounds like the restaurant does not want to take accountability for what happened. If the mouse jumped in a container that had the raw chicke in it or something like that it could have eaisly been mistaken for chicken, it could happen to anyone not only chinese, but is the chinese restaurant willing to own up to their mistake if necessary. I dont feel CW11 did anything wrong. they report the news. And for the person who said he does not like black people from the ghetto, chinese people have their ghettos, which are disgusting, and probably have their fair share of ignorant people and idiots, and if thats the case maybe chinese restaurants should stay out of the "so called ghetto" but they wont because we support their businesses. maybe I will talk to some people to organize a boycott of chinese restaurants in New York City by blacks, then how would these restaurants survive?

Let's just realize that black people from the ghetto are just dumb idiots. I respect blacks who actually tries to better themselves with education and dedication. I simply cannot tolerate the idiotic blacks who believe that everything should be given to them because of something THEIR ancestors went through. Also it's obvious that the idiotic african american woman just wants publicity. You could see it from her appearance that she's a poor and uneducated person whose frustration about her own undesirable status, led to her racism against the asian owners. On a side note for the ghetto blacks out there... keep on killing each other.. as Martha Stewart says... "It's a good thing" =).

Perhaps CW11 did nothing "wrong" by just reporting what was claimed: But how dare the restaurant missed that "fried mice" and let that rat-shaped, stinking so called "chicken" get into that fried rice? Who have the ability to fried that mice? Restaurant? Somebody else? How come that rat was eviscerated, skinned, unboned and floured? Who would brother to do all that to "make a snack" or to "pull a scam"? Why would that rat look "straightened" instead of showing signs of shock? I smell a scam here! Think CSI, people-- CSI!

(p.s. You don't need to go to restaurants to get fried chicken, you can buy fryers from kitchen appliance stores and make your own)

I\'ve eaten at this same spot... We asked for shrimp and broccoli and they sent something that resembled chicken. I couldn\'t eat it because the texture wasn\'t chicken. Later I saw CW11 report ... I was literally sick. The image resembled a mouse with the tail in tact. I don\'t think it\'s a fabrication, the biologist even stated some bone was still attached. I searched the next day for the article, astonished it wasn\'t covered... but I ran into how some restaurants prepare rodents. NY Times did the article prior. I addressed my Chinese friends and they say in their country they\'re not limited to beef, chicken and pork. I can\'t tell other people what to eat and speak for all restaurants, but the ones I encountered it\'s either artifical products (or non-traditional meat) replaced or mixed in with real meat and sauteed with a MSG sauce. In certain neighborhoods you should see the garbage they sell. I stopped eating it all together and advised my mate the same. Of course he didn\'t listen, went else where in a better area... and got food poisoning last weekend.... (and yes.. that\'s the only meal he ate that day.)

Seriously if you look at the video, you know that ain\'t a mouse even if it is shaped like a mouse. People are just dumb and ignorant and likes to pull stunts and take advantage of the weak. If that was some other restaraunt she probably wouldn\'t report it to the news station. Just to add to the facts, how much mouse meat can you get from one mice? Also is mouse meat even white? The sauce they used is garlic sauce. Yet it still is faded white. Did they actually take the time to skin and take out all the bones and furs? That is just not very profitable. Disecting a mouse takes a long time. Notice they did not even bother ripping the thing apart? To see if there is bones. In my view it didn\'t look like it had bones. If it didn\'t have no bones, then why is the tail so damn big? Then they showed it and said it even has eyes? Did they show a head? Does head even have meat in it? Come on I could throw millions of things at this publicity stunt and people can\'t say that is a mouse. All they interviewed were people on the streets who said yes yes yes. But did they ever bother to show people who said no?
