Some Visa Holders Are Allowed to Apply for Green Card

World Journal, news report, Posted: Dec 12, 2008

NEW YORK The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has announced that T and U Visa holders are now allowed to apply for a green card if they have been using one of these visas and living in the country for three years. The World Journal reports that the T Visa allows victims of human trafficking to stay in the United States to assist law enforcement. U Visa holders have been victims of 27 types of crimes, including domestic violence. The new regulation will go into effect in 30 days. It was not illegal for these visa holders to apply for a green card, but there were no practical guidelines for their application process. Under the new regulation, the process for T and U visa holders will be similar to that of other green card applicants. There is a quota of 5,000 recipients for T Visas each year and U Visas don't have an annual cap. However, it's expected that there won't be a rush of T and U Visas holders applying for green cards under the new regulation.
