ICE Searched LA Hotels for Fake Chinese Passports

China Press, Posted: Feb 16, 2010

LOS ANGELESOn Feb 5, three family hotels in Monterey Park were searched by the ICE in an attempt to arrest over 10 Chinese immigrants who were suspected of carrying fake Chinese passports, but no one was arrested in the action. According to the China Press, the three sites had been under ICE investigation since 2008 when a package from China was found with five fake Chinese passports. Those fake passports reportedly had photos of the same person but with different names, and that person has just been granted asylum in the United States.

Chinese residents in the hotels were angry about ICEs raids. One resident, Huang, said 12 ICE agents kicked open their doors at 7 a.m. and handcuffed 11 Chinese residents without showing a search warrant. Though no one was arrested, ICE also took their cameras, cell phones, phone cards, ATM cards and driver licenses.
