The Jews in Modern China

New America Now, Audio, Sandip Roy Posted: Mar 24, 2010

Editor's Note: The word "Diaspora," or the scattering of seed, was originally used to describe Jews exiled from Israel by the Babylonians and the Romans. The Jewish diaspora stretches all over the world, from Crown Heights in New York to Ethiopia. Few, however, know that a thriving Jewish community also existed in China. Thousands of Jews found shelter in Shanghai at a time when few countries in the world would open their doors to them. A new exhibit called "Jews in Modern China" traces that story through artifacts and photographs collected over decades. Linda Frank is chair of the exhibit at the Presidio Officer's Club Exhibition Hall in San Francisco now through May 16th.

The program is part of Shanghai Celebration, a bay-area wide collaboration of assorted exhibitions, films, performances, lectures, and other events.
