Fake Foreign Degrees On the Rise In China
Global Times, Posted: Mar 16, 2010
BEIJING—As the number of Chinese foreign students returning home increases in recent years, the volume of fake degrees and diploma certificates are also on the rise. According to Global Times, buying fake foreign degrees is not uncommon among Chinese foreign students, especially for those who are failing classes and facing their parents' high expectations.
Four years ago, Shirley Li, 29, decided to pay an online business $3,500 Canadian dollars for a fake degree and two transcripts from the Canadian university she was kicked out of because she could not disappoint her mother. Returning to China with a fake high honors degree in commerce, Li got a well-paid job at an investment firm, but since then, she has been living in fear that her secret will be revealed one day.
The paper says the lack of communication between Chinese companies and foreign universities is part of the problem because most Chinese employers do not check the authenticity of foreign degrees. Moreover, the situation has worsened with increasing number of students returning China after the global economic downturn.
