San Francisco Issues Municipal IDs
El Mensajero, Posted: Jan 21, 2009
SAN FRANCISCO - On Jan.15 San Francisco launched a program to grant municipal IDs to residents of this city, regardless of their immigration status, reports El Mensajero. The program, which was delayed for several months, could benefit both undocumented immigrants and residents who have no other form of identification. According to Miguel Robles of the Latin American Alliance for Immigrant Rights, the new card might be safer than the matricula consular, the card issued by the Mexican consulates. The matricula consular, he said, is not very effective because presenting it could be seen as self-incrimination by an undocumented immigrant.
To apply for a municipal ID card, San Francisco residents must present proof that they live in the city. Prices of the new identity cards are $15 for adults and $5 for children, seniors and low-income residents. More information is available at
