Taiwanese Immigrants Build Up Debt in Home Country

World Journal, Posted: Oct 22, 2009

BOSTON -- In the last two years, several Taiwanese immigrants who have returned to Taiwan for a visit have been met with a debt to pay, reports the World Journal. When expatriates restore their Taiwanese residence during their stay in Taiwan, they enter Taiwan's national health insurance system. Many did not terminate their insurance plan when they left the country years before, so the monthly premium has accumulated over time, awaiting payment upon their return. People facing these fees say the debt is unreasonable and that they weren't well-informed of the situation. Ren Hong, the vice chairman of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Commission, said he is working with the Ministry of the Interior to develop new regulations on health insurance cards and address the issue.
