YO! Youth Outlook Multimedia, Video, Video: Jazmyne Young//Words: Erricka X Posted: Aug 18, 2008

Editors Note: In 2007 127 homicides occurred in Oakland, 98 occurred in San Francisco and 47 homicides occurred last year in Richmond but there are programs aimed at quelling the violence. Beats, Rhymes and Life is a program that uses HIp Hop as therapy to keep youngsters in the studio and off the streets.

In partnership with EBACY East Bay Asian youth Center and Oakland High School this student led program consists of an after school hip hop therapy sessions where students from several East Bay schools can spit lyrics to work out their problems instead of picking up guns. Their mission is to promote positive youth development and mental wellness, supporting teens in ways they find most meaningful. They recently had an event at La Pena cultural center where they sold CDs to raise money for the program.
