Student Documentaries on Fujianese in New York

World Journal, Posted: Sep 12, 2009

NEW YORKThe Chinese American Planning Council screened two documentaries made by 11 Chinese high school students about Fujianese immigrants experiences in New York City, reports the World Journal. The documentaries recorded interesting immigration stories told by Fujianese elders, small business owners and youth. They also pictured Fujianese workers laboring tirelessly in restaurants to support their families and communities. The project was created to inspire students interest in exploring their own communities in a fun way.

Students who participated were divided into two groups: American-born Chinese and new immigrants. That was to ensure that each documentary offered a different perspective. Both groups agreed that getting Fujianese workers to talk to them was the biggest challenge.
