Hispanic Parents Protest Racial ID of Kids

ATLANTA, Ga. -- Parents of schoolchildren are confused about a new measure that requires them to identify their children's race, even though Hispanic or Latino is not an option, reports Atlanta Latino. The U.S. Department of Education sent letters home in students' backpacks which some Hispanics considered to be racist. One group of parents said this was an opportunity to explore their heritage since there is great ethnic variety among Latinos. DOE spokesman Jim Bradshaw said the change is a long overdue measure to comply with a 30-year-old law intended to improve counting of Hispanics in the Census. It wasn't until this year that the change was implemented urging states to collect racial identification from their students to better determine the ethnic and racial diversity in the country.
