Rickshaw Puller New Music Idol in Bangladesh

Siliconeer, Posted: Nov 22, 2008

Bangladesh's new musical star is a white-bearded rickshaw puller, reports Silconeer magazine.

Bangladesh's version of an American Idol style show called Magic Tin Chakar Taroka, or Three Wheel Star, was only open to riders and drivers of Bangladesh's one million-plus three-wheelers -- its cycle- and auto-rickshaws. Omar Ali sang a folk song called Lovers Never Drown that had many of Bangladesh's leading pop stars dancing in their seats. Ali won about $2,000 and gets to release a CD and DVD.

He hopes to have a music career now instead of driving rickshaws. All 10 finalists who together received 10 million text message votes from around the world were awarded at least $300. That would allow most of them to at least buy their own rickshaws. But Abdul Rahman Khokon who came in third said he would use his money to find out what happened to his 80-year-old mother who disappeared from their one-room house three years ago.
