WASHINGTON — The U.S. Census is reaching out to members of Congress and community leaders to find new ways of geting accurate counts of immigrant communities in the 2010 census, Hispanic Link reports. Sen. Robert Menéndez (D-N.J.) said, following an April 29 meeting with Census Bureau Director Steve Murdock, that one of the main challenges the agency will face besides handling technical operations efficiently will be how it reaches out to these communities in the tense climate now surrounding immigration. “Failure to ensure an accurate census puts in jeopardy our ability to adequately reach intended segments of our population in the future,” he said. “It is not only an important tool in measuring the size of our population, but crucial for our local, state and national governments to plan and implement public policies that are fairly distributed.”
