Virginia to Elect New Governor

ARLINGTON, Va. -- Republican Bob McDonnell and Democrat Creigh Deeds are in an all-out race to see who will be the next governor of Virginia, with both parties bringing in their heavy-hitters to help campaign, reports El Tiempo Latino. The race is one of only two gubernatorial elections this year. The parties are targeting minority groups and hoping to win votes through campaigns in the Latino media. According to Democrat Walter Tejada, "The Hispanic vote will make the difference."

President Barack Obama made his second appearance last Tuesday to campaign for Deeds and ask voters to ignore the polls which are favoring McDonnell. Deeds's campaign noted that Virginians voted for Obama for president last year, the first time in 44 years the state has voted for a Democrat. However, a Washington Post poll found that only four out of 10 people said Obama's campaigning would influence the election in favor of Deeds.

Meanwhile, Republicans are confident that they will return to power. "A Republican victory in Virginia will send the message, 'Enough is enough,'" former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said while campaigning for McDonnell Oct. 28 in Springfield, Va.
