Salvadorans Outnumber Dominicans for First Time in U.S.

NEW YORK -- Salvadorans have replaced Dominicans as the fourth largest Latino subgroup, according to a report analyzing 2008 data released by the American Community Survey. The three largest Latino groups remain Mexicans, Puerto Ricans and Cubans. The Census Bureau projects that there are currently 49.7 million Latinos in the United States (50.9 million if you include Puerto Rico). The National Institute for Latino Policy notes that we will have to wait for the results of the 2010 Census itself to get the Latino subgroup figures for this year, and to see how they compare to the ACS figures.
