NEW YORK – Asian Americans are excited about President Obama’s nomination of Hispanic federal appeals judge Sonia Sotomayor for the Supreme Court, reports the World Journal. Margaret Fung, executive director of Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) said the nomination is extraordinarily meaningful for the ethnic community, and shows that President Obama understands the importance of the ethnic community to the whole society. Fung believes Sotomayor will bring new perspectives to the Supreme Court. AALDEF attorney Kenneth Kimmerling once worked with Sotomayor at the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund (PRLDEF). He said Sotomayor has long been known for her work to combat racial discrimination. Kimmerling also said there is no one like Sotomayor who has a profound understanding of the U.S. law system.
