Violence Against Women Act Dies in House

Posted: Jan 03, 2013

House Republican leaders failed to vote on the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, despite a last-minute intervention by Vice President Joe Biden. The bill, which was approved for reauthorization by the Senate in April, would have extended domestic violence protections to three groups of domestic violence victims who were not covered in the original law: LGBT individuals, undocumented immigrants and Native American women. This is the first time that the bill failed to be reauthorized since it was signed in 1994.
