Naming of Philippine Street After Philip Morris Being Probed

MANILA - The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has ordered an investigation into the decision of the Tanauan City council in Batangas Province to name a local street after the U.S. cigarette brand Philip Morris. Tobacco has been described by a non-government health group as a product that has consistently contributed to 10 Filipino deaths a day.

The DTI said the complaint against Mayor Sonia Torres-Aquino and other Tanauan City officials was consistent with (a provision) of the Monitoring and Enforcement Guidelines of Republic Act no. 9211 (otherwise known as the Tobacco Regulation Act of 2007) and its implementing rules and regulations. The law prohibits all forms of advertisement of a cigarette brand.

Lawyer Carmen Herce, head of Philip Morris' public affairs office, said they had nothing to do with the Tanauan City council's move. It was an initiative of the Tanauan City government,
