Beneath the Lion's Gaze

New America Now, Audio, Sandip Roy Posted: Feb 23, 2010

Editor's Note: Most Americans are familiar with Emperor Haile Selassie, but few know about the country he ruled or the revolution that tore it apart in the 1970s. In the chaos, many Ethiopians fled to the United States. Maaza Mengiste has published her first novel, Beneath the Lion's Gaze. The story harkens back to those harrowing days of revolution and dashed dreams as viewed through the eyes of one family in Addis Ababa.
