Activists Ask San Francisco to Enforce Sanctuary City Policy

Sing Tao Daily, Posted: Aug 21, 2008

SAN FRANCISCO The city of San Franciscos sanctuary city policy has provoked debate after an undocumented immigrant killed a father and his three sons, the Sing Tao Daily reports. Immigrant rights organizations criticized San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom for asking the Juvenile Probation Department to hand juveniles who have committed crimes over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The sanctuary city policy, established in the 1980s, prohibits the citys law enforcement department from cooperating with ICE. The Sing Tao Daily reports that Mayor Newsom changed the citys policy recently because he plans to campaign for the office of state governor. Angela Chan, attorney with the Asian Law Caucus, said it worries immigrant communities that Newsom did not consult with them, or even get the approval of city council, but instead simply asked the Juvenile Probation Department to notify ICE about arrested juveniles.
