BEIJING India won its first-ever individual gold medal in the Olympics and the winner, Abhinav Bindra, is reaping the spoils, reports PunjabNewsline.com. Bindra won a gold medal in the 10m air rifle and his delighted parents are gifting him a five-star hotel. Dr. Bindra has spent many tens of thousands of rupees on his sons training, physiotherapy, shooting equipment and specialized computer software. A millionaire industrialist, Dr. Bindra provided his son with an indoor shooting range, reports the Hindu. He said his son practiced shooting seven hours a day. Mother Babli Bindra said she would go to the holy site of the Golden Temple in Amritsar to offer prayers and thanks. She also cut a cake in his name and joked that he'd just become the most eligible bachelor in India, but said it was too early to talk about him getting married. He should first enjoy his win and when the time comes well talk about that as well, she told CNN-IBN. Abhinav missed out on a medal in the final round of the Athens Olypmics. Bollywood stars Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan also congratulated the winner, reports the Times of India. Bachchan quoted a friend who said, After almost a century and 2 billion births, an Indian wins his first individual gold at the Olympics.
