Funes’s Victory Good For El Salvador’s Democracy

La Opinion, Posted: Mar 17, 2009

LOS ANGELES — The victory of Mauricio Funes, the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN) candidate, opens a new chapter for El Salvador, says today’s editorial in La Opinion. The editorial says that Funes’s win “puts an end to 20 years of conservative rule,” and "injects fresh energy” into El Salvador’s democratic process. The editorial also suggests that Funes’s victory should bring Salvadorans pride, regardless of the political parties they support, because the opposition party's victory is the “best sign of a vibrant democracy.”
