Indian Country Today, Posted: Aug 06, 2009

CANASTOTA, N.Y. -- Fifty Native tribes have received $100 million in an effort to invigorate housing and stimulate community development, reports Indian Country Today. Earlier this year, the Obama administration allocated $510 million for tribal housing. Within that fund, $255 million was distributed to tribes based on a competitive bidding system. Cook Inlet Housing Authority of Anchorage, Alaska received $5 million, the largest individual grant issued. The Cherokee Nation, the Muscogee Creek Nation, The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, the Oglala Lakota Sioux Housing Authority, and the SWA Corp each received $4 million. The remaining $150 was awarded to almost 600 tribes and housing entities. The funds are intended to be used for economic development, including housing projects.
