Arpaio, Thomas Accused of Political Revenge

La Voz, Samuel Murillo Posted: Dec 21, 2009

Latino activists and community members in Arizona accused Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas and Sheriff Joe Arpaio of engaging in political vendettas by launching criminal investigations into their opponents, reported La Voz in Phoenix.

They referred in particular to the indictments filed against Mary Rose Wilcox, supervisor of District 5 for Maricopa County. Wilcox is one of the most vocal critics of Arpaios illegal-immigrant crackdown. She was charged by a grand jury with 36 felonies for conflict of interest, forgery and false swearing related to loans she received from Chicanos Por la Causa (CPLC), a local non-profit. La Voz reported that on December 11, the sheriffs office conducted a search of CPLC as
part of the investigation.

Edmundo Hidalgo, director of CPLC, said Wilcox didnt receive preferential treatment for any of the loans she was given.
