Billboard Campaign Honors Domestic Workers

SAN FRANCISCO -- A media campaign aimed to promote dignity and respect for domestic workers is underway in San Francisco, reports El Tecolote. The photos for the campaign, taken by Joseph Cultice, a former assistant to famed photographer Annie Lebowitz, are striking. The campaign includes billboards, postcards, bus ads and posters. La Raza Centro Legal’s La Colectiva de Mujeres (Women’s Collective) built the campaign with other community partners to promote the value of domestic workers and send a strong message to employers to use non-toxic “green” household cleaners.

“Communicating Strength and Hope”/”Comunicando poder y esperanza” is the result of two years of planning with La Colectiva, which is a worker-run collective for Latina immigrant workers; the Labor Occupational Health Program at UC Berkeley; and Underground Advertising, which works exclusively with progressive and environmental non-profit organizations. This is one of eight projects across the nation by New Routes to Community Health whose focus is on immigrant health through the use of immigrant groups, media makers, ands community organizations.
