Immigrant Mother Arrested After Seeking Help in Domestic Violence Incident

La Prensa, Posted: Mar 06, 2009

A mother of three was arrested and jailed by police in Lake County, Fla., after she called police for help in a domestic violence incident. Police in the city of Tavares arrested Rita Cote after responding to the home of Cotes sister, where her boyfriend was reportedly beating her. Cote, a Honduran immigrant married to an American citizen, could not provide identification to police, who then took her into detention for nine days, never charging her with a crime. She now faces deportation.
