Fewer Undocumented Immigrants in U.S.

Univision, Posted: Feb 24, 2009

WASHINGTON -- For the first time since 2005, the number of undocumented immigrants living in the United States fell in January 2008, the last month with available data, according to the Department of Homeland Security. The report, released on Monday, found that the number of immigrants without legal status dropped from 11.8 million in January 2007 to 11.6 million in January 2008. This is the first year that the number of undocumented immigrants did not increase, according to the report. The department identified a 37 percent increase in the number of undocumented immigrants from 8.5 million in 2000 to 11.6 million in 2008. Mexico continues to be the number one country of emigration to the United States, according to the study, with Mexicans representing 61 percent of the U.S. undocumented immigrant population, followed in much smaller numbers by immigrants from other Latin American countries.
