Colorado Lawmakers, Activists Promote Pro-Immigrant Legislation

La Opinin, Posted: Jan 05, 2010

DENVERLawmakers and pro-immigrant activists in Colorado announced Monday that they will push for changing detention legislation currently applied to undocumented immigrants because of the "negative effect they have on the community. reports La Opinin.

"Our broken immigration system unfairly puts many immigrants behind bars," said state Sen. Morgan Carroll (D-Aurora).

"More than half of those immigrants detained never committed a crime. Detention is expensive because it costs the state more than $100 per day per detainee. But we lose more than money. We lose as a community when we arrest them (immigrants) as a first resort, when it should be the last," he said.

Carroll said that instead of detaining immigrants, part of the solution could be reducing the required waiting time to complete immigration formalities.
