Drug Violence Scares Tourists from Mexico

JUAREZ, Mex.—A wave of drug trafficking-related murders has created an atmosphere of fear in this border city, reports Spanish-language EFE on Univision Online. According to Roger Maier of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), fewer vehicles crossed and locals saw shorter waiting lines at the El Paso-Juarez border over Memorial Day weekend than the week before. The CBP is aware of the violence in Juarez and has taken protective measures, carrying high caliber weapons and wearing bulletproof vests at U.S. border inspection points this weekend. However, Miguel Gomez-Mont, director of Mexico’s National Tourism Fund, told EFE that the war between drug trafficking cartels and the police has not affected tourism. He says that of the more than 1,300 murders related to the feuding cartels this year, only two victims were tourists.
