Kosher Slaughterhouse Management Accused

Jewish Daily Forward, Rebecca Spence Posted: Jul 14, 2008

LOS ANGELES Critics of the Agriprocessors, Inc, the owner of the slaughterhouse raided on May 12 by federal immigration agents, are asking for stronger government action, according to The Jewish Daily Forward. The critics, including some rabbis, are not satisfied with the arrest of managers and want them to be held accountable for a host of labor and food safety violations. The plant has been charged with not observing protections against mad cow disease, as well as the presence of fecal matter in meat processing areas. They have also been charged with not paying workers for time spent cleaning up and donning and doffing protective gear. In addition, workers claim they are neither given breaks free from duties nor full compensation for overtime. The Rubashkins, the ultra-Orthodox family that owns the plant, has hired a chief compliance officer, a former U.S. attorney James Martin, to make changes.
