Chinese Engineers Sentenced for Stealing Business Secrets

China Press, News Report, Posted: Nov 25, 2008

NEW YORK A federal court in San Jose, California on Nov. 21 sentenced two Chinese engineers to one year in prison for stealing business secrets from four companies, including Sun and NEC. The China Press reports that Fei Ye and Ming Zhong, who has permanent U.S. residency, admitted to their crimes. The Chinese newspaper called their prosecution one of the most serious cases of industrial espionage since the Economic Espionage Act was passed in 1996. Ye and Zhong were caught at San Francisco Airport in 2001 before their flight took off for China. On the same day they were charged, a Chinese-Canadian engineer, Xiaodng Meng, was charged with the same crimes. Meng stole business secrets from Quantum3D, where he worked, and sold the information to the companys competitor. In June, the same court in San Jose sentenced Meng to two years in prison.
